Legal Resources for Student Organizing for Palestine

During this back-to-school season, we’re sharing some essential Palestine Legal resources about your right to organize for Palestine on campus and beyond, including:

  • Our Know Your Rights resources for students

  • 10 Reasons for Students to Call Palestine Legal

  • Our interactive guide on efforts to redefine antisemitism to silence advocacy for Palestinian rights

As always, please contact us if you have questions or face barriers to your organizing or academic work. You can also contact us if your student or community group would like to request a Know Your Rights workshop for your membership.

We are currently offering virtual workshops tailored to the needs of the group requesting them. We may be able to accommodate requests for in-person workshops depending on location and other factors, and hope to be able to travel to your campus again soon!

Know Your Rights

College students around the country have faced obstacles and experienced backlash from Israel advocacy groups and universities intent on censoring, shutting down or undermining their speech activities.

This resource was created by Palestine Legal and the Center for Constitutional Rights to help flag legal issues students may encounter when organizing an event or protest or simply expressing support for Palestinian human rights.

Please note, this resource is provided for informational purposes only and should not be taken to create an attorney-client relationship between readers and Palestine Legal. These materials are not a substitute for seeking the advice of an attorney about particular situations and facts. Only a licensed attorney, reviewing individual facts, may render legal advice. 10 Reasons for Student Activists to Call Palestine Legal

Here are a few reasons why student activists might want to reach out to Palestine Legal. We encourage you to reach out as you have questions about how to prepare for potential backlash and for support if you or your group are being targeted for your organizing or speech activities. If you’re not sure whether we can help, contact us and we’ll let you know.

Resist Efforts to Silence and Smear Your Advocacy

Be sure to check out our interactive resource visualizing two decades of efforts to silence advocacy for Palestinian freedom through a #DistortedDefinition of antisemitism.

The resource features:

  • timeline documenting major periods in the creation and use of the distorted definition;

  • Stories of the human impact of the redefinition on students, teachers, journalists and activists;

  • And resources to learn more about the movement for Palestinian freedom and support it against smearing attacks.

 Advisory on Law Enforcement Visits to Palestine Activists

In 2018, Palestine Legal issued an advisory and an update regarding FBI visits to Palestine activists. Given reports we have heard of activists being questioned by the FBI and local police amid this year’s popular uprising for Palestinian rights, we reissued this information for our community and shared new and updated resources from the National Lawyers’ Guild and the Center for Constitutional Rights.
